I want to personally welcome our new Gaffer, Darren Young, to Stirling Albion and wish him all the best for his tenure.

And if you’re going to start – start with a bang!

Darren will not have his troubles to seek for tonight’s match against Elgin.

We have several Covid-related issues and a number of injuries meaning that of the total first team squad, we have 10 fit outfield players and two goalkeepers available.

We did apply to SPFL for a postponement, but the SPFL Board rules dictate that clubs with an U20s set-up must supplement the first team with players from there.

And that’s a curious situation is it not? At a time when we’re being exhorted to minimise contact with other people, we are having to draft in young players from outside the first team “bubble”.

Everyone will, of course, be passed as Covid-negative by means of a Lateral Flow Test, but it leaves me wondering what would have happened had we not been investing in Youth Development. Not all clubs at our level have such a set up, so are we disadvantaged for developing young players? Does this allow for a level playing field?

Nevertheless, the match goes ahead, and for those attending the match tonight – or following via Twitter – there will be inevitably some unfamiliar names  on the teamlines and some players, by necessity, being played out of position. Some other players who are carrying an injury, will be pushing themselves beyond the call of duty to play when normally they wouldn’t be.

Welcome to Stirling Albion, Darren.
