Peterhead claimed their fifth successive Forthbank victory to stay a point behind Ladbrokes League 2 leaders Edinburgh City.
After the 3-2 loss at Elgin the previous week, this was the first time we have suffered back-to-back defeats since Kevin Rutkiewicz took over and Annan’s win over Albion Rovers leaves us seven points outside the play-offs places.
In a tight game in which we perhaps merited a draw, the only goal came after 34 minutes when Rory McAllister scored with a fine header after a good run and cross from Jamie Stevenson.
There were four changes to the starting XI at Elgin, with Jason Marr and Kyle Banner replacing injured duo Evan Horne and Jordan McGregor. On-loan St Mirren midfielder Scott Glover and Darren Smith came in for Neil McLaughlin and Dom Docherty.
Ross McGeachie hit the side netting following a corner and Max Wright had a close-range header saved when he probably should have scored. We were more than holding our own, only to fall behind when McAllister bagged his 12th league goal of the season.
Shane Sutherland should have made the game safe just short of the hour mark when he seized on a defensive error and went round keeper Calum Ferrie but his finish missed the target.
Willie Gibson had a shot cleared off the line by Marr as we left gaps chasing an equaliser in a frustrating second half when we knocked on the door a few times but lacked a killer instinct and didn’t work keeper Greg Fleming often enough.
Banner had a chance with a header right at the end but couldn’t get enough power on it as Peterhead closed out their ninth away win of 2018/19.
Next up for Stirling is a home game against third-placed Clyde on Tuesday before we begin our March fixtures with a trip to Cowdenbeath on Saturday.
