Elgin hit back from two goals down at half-time to claim a deserved draw at Forthbank as our lead at the top of Ladbrokes League 2 was trimmed to four points over Stenhousemuir.
Darren Smith’s double – which takes his tally for the season to 11 goals – had us on course for a seventh win in eight games but Chris McLeish pulled one back midway through the second half and substitute Jordan Allan equalised six minutes later.
Jim Weir’s men might even have won it in the closing stages but Mark Foden pulled off a terrific save from Allan at the back post as we drew our first league game of the season.
Binos boss Dave Mackay made one change to the team that beat Annan 3-2 the previous week – Liam Caddis returned from injury to replace Willie Robertson, who was sidelined with a knock.
Stirling were ahead after just seven minutes. Callumn Morrison did well on the right and his cross was perfect for Darren Smith to sweep the ball into the net from six yards.
Bruce Anderson, on loan from Aberdeen, rattled the bar from outside the box as City were denied an equaliser before we scored again in 24 minutes. Caddis played a great ball into the area and Smith got a touch to take it past Marc Waters, although the keeper will feel he should have done better.
Elgin came out strongly in the second half and had a penalty appeal turned down before they pulled a goal back in 68 minutes. Brian Cameron did well to win an aerial duel and set up McLeish, who looped a header into the top corner.
Allan then headed home after we failed to deal with a corner as Elgin followed up last week’s 3-0 defeat of Montrose with another positive result, having lost 1-0 here on their last visit in February.
