Albion came from behind to beat 10-man Berwick at a bitterly cold Forthbank and move into the play-off places for the first time this season as the visitors dropped to the foot of the Ladbrokes League 2 table.
Stuart McLaren’s men were not at their best and the Borderers were unfortunate to be behind at the break but we created a number of good chances after the interval.
It was a case of job done as we followed up the 1-1 draw at Arbroath and the 7-0 thrashing of Montrose with another vital win to climb to third in the table.
McLaren named the same XI that scored seven times in midweek as we faced a Berwick side who had won 3-1 at Forthbank earlier in the season.
John Coughlin’s men were in front after just nine minutes when Blair Henderson took advantage of some slack defending to find the corner with a low shot from the edge of the box but we were soon level.
Mark Lamont swung over a great cross from the right wing and Ross Smith headed home his second goal of the season.
Two minutes later came the pivotal moment in the match. Darren Smith got on the end of a perfect pass from Ross Forsyth and knocked the ball just wide.
However, referee Steven Kirkland judged that he had been impeded in the process and awarded a penalty, with on-loan Hibernian defender Jordan McGregor sent off for the denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Sean Dickson confidently converted the spot-kick but we struggled to impose ourselves on the game and Chris Smith made a good save to deny Henderson, with the follow-up lashed against the underside of the bar by Dylan Stevenson.
There was another let-off when Henderson got beyond Ross Smith but Chris Smith was out quickly to block the striker, who should probably have scored.
We were much improved after half-time and Steven Doris almost converted a Lamont cross before seeing another effort deflected just wide.
Chris Smith saved well from Finn Graham but we had most of the play – Doris came close again then substitute Moses Olanrewaju had a shot cleared off the line.
