Substitute Sandy Cunningham celebrated his 19th birthday by grabbing a stoppage-time winner as we scored twice in the dying minutes to stun 10-man Berwick at Forthbank.
The teenager headed home his seventh goal of 2013/14 when he got on the end of Craig Comrie’s free-kick to move us five points clear of the Borderers with four games to go.
The result is a huge boost in our bid to make the play-offs as we made it four home wins out of four against the Shielfield men in the past two seasons.
There was one change to the team that beat Annan 2-1 at Galabank, with Ross McGeachie on the right of a back three in place of the injured Mick O’Byrne.
Berwick went ahead after 39 minutes of a keenly-contested first half of few chances when poor defending allowed top scorer Darren Lavery to find space in the box and he beat David Crawford from close range.
In the ensuing celebrations, Paul Currie was red carded for what the referee apparently deemed to be an offensive gesture to the crowd and player/boss Colin Cameron then limped off injured.
The visitors defended stoutly in the second half and restricted us to very few openings but the introduction of Cunningham for the final quarter made a difference.
Even so, we struggled to create chances and, although Crawford had little to do at the other end, it took a timely tackle from Phil Johnston to deny Ross Drummond.
Greig McDonald’s men never gave up and were rewarded in the final minute when Cunningham latched on to Jordan White’s flick and crossed for David Weatherston, who tucked away his fifth goal of the season via the inside of the post.
A thrilling comeback was complete three minutes into injury time when Cunningham, who missed out last week after suffering mild concussion against Montrose a fortnight ago, stole in at the back post to claim what could prove to be a hugely important goal.
