Garry Wood netted a disputed stoppage-time penalty to earn Montrose a draw as our winless run was extended to five matches.
Greig McDonald’s men remain fourth in the table with six matches remaining but five clubs are separated by just four points in the battle for the play-offs.
This is a match we should have won but we twice allowed Stuart Garden’s side to hit back after missing several good chances to secure three vital points.
McDonald made three changes to the team beaten 1-0 by Clyde – Lee Hamilton, David McClune and Phil Johnston replaced Ross McGeachie, Danny Ashe and Stephen Day.
The first half was a largely lifeless affair, with few chances, but we came closest to scoring. David Weatherston, on for Sandy Cunningham who took the full force of a clearance in the face, was denied by Stuart McKenzie and the ex-Falkirk forward had an effort cleared off the line after he had rounded the keeper.
We started the second half strongly and went ahead in 51 minutes when the impressive Craig Comrie steered a low shot into the net after Montrose had failed to clear their lines.
Albion were completely on top now but Weatherston was again thwarted by McKenzie and Johnston fired wide when sent clean through, seconds after we had a goal disallowed for offside.
The visitors only came to life in the closing stages and equalised in 79 minutes when Paul Watson, fortunate to escape a red card for a bad tackle on Mick O’Byrne four minutes earlier, swept a free-kick into the corner from 20 yards.
We were back in front with seven minutes left when McClune sent a superb shot into the net via the left-hand post from the edge of the box for his first goal for the club.
That should have been decisive but we failed to close the game out and referee Gavin Duncan ruled that O’Byrne had tripped Wood, although it looked like the ex-Ross County striker had got his shot away.
Wood confidently converted his penalty as we drew at home for the third time this month, ahead of next weekend’s trip to second-placed Annan.
