Wembley Memories Spoiled by Loss to England

Monday 28th April 2008 - by Stewart Taylor
Captain Liam Corr was denied the opportunity to climb the Wembley steps to collect the Bobby Moore Trophy from Mrs. Stephanie Moore last Saturday when the Scotland Schools' Under 18 team lost to England 2 - 0.

Corr had performed exceptionally well in a close game and was certainly amongst the pick of the players on the magnificent surface of the New Wembley Stadium. Losing two nil minutes into the second half Scotland rallied and missed the chance of a goal when Alloa FC's Hugh Kerr had his spot kick saved brilliantly with 15 minutes to go.

With some outstanding play,Corr then set up a chance for substutute Mark Fitzpatrick . The Airdrie FC youngster scored only to have the goal chalked off for offside. Liam Corr enquired of top official Howard Webb who refereed superbly, why the goal wasn't given. Webb agreed he had been surprised by his assistant's offside flag!

Despite the disappointment of losing, the four Stirling Albion players were delighted to be involved in such a memorable event. Centre back Don Morrison had another first class game at schoolboy International level against tough opponents. Unfortunately neither Magnus Neilson nor Gregg Munn got a chance to play in the game.

All four players received their International caps at the end of the game in a ceremony involving SSFA President Stewart Taylor and Sir Trevor Brooking.

With visits to Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament as well as the game at Wembley it was quite e week end for the Stirling Albion youngsters.
