As a player he began his senior career at Dumbarton after he was called up from Possilpark YMCA in 1983. While with the Sons he had a trial at St Etienne but it was Hearts who stepped in to sign him in an £85,000 deal during the summer of 1986. In the next three seasons he found it difficult to break into the first team. He then in 1989 signed for St Johnstone. This was to be the best era of his playing career as scored 23 goals in 124 appearances and was in the Saints first division championship side.

He then joined Bert Paton’s Dunfermline where during his four seasons at East End Park he won another first division title before having a short loan spell at Livingston. He then moved to Airdrie for two seasons before heading to Partick Thistle where he won a second division championship medal. He then moved to Morton and finally to QOS.

He was appointed manager of the Albion in 2002. Over the years since then he has built the club back up to the first division on a very limited budget after the club had finished second bottom of the third division under Ray Stewart the previous season.

In his second season in charge he took the club to promotion from the Third Division. The next season the club made an excellent start and continued to press for the promtion places to the First Division but in the end he had to settle for a mid table finish. The next season 2005-06 started disastorously for the club and they failed to win any of their first eleven league games and he was under pressure. Then a mid week match at Morton in October saw the club change their formation to 4-5-1 saw the club win it’s first match and then go on a long unbeaten run and it was only a defeat to Partick in mid April saw the clubs play-off hopes end.

The next season he giuded the club to play-off victory at Airdrie to get the club back to the first division for the first time in 10 years. Last season he found the going difficult managing the only part-time team in the divsion and a number of crucial players injured during the season saw the club return to the second division. This season he is determined to take the club straight back.
