Former Player Interviews

STEVE McCORMICK
March 2008

Interview by our website contributor

What are your favourite memories from your time at Stirling?
Winning the league, without a doubt! Lots of great memories though including scoring against Rangers at Ibrox in the cup and just the banter in the dressing room – it was a great bunch of lads we had.

Just how good was the promotion winning team that year?
It’s probably the best team I have ever played in. I think we were quite lucky with injuries that year but right from the back of the team all the way through the squad we had quality. We all used to hang about with each other as well so it was a really good team atmosphere…..even Drinkell got it right that year on the pitch.

You had a lethal partnership with Alex Bone, did you enjoy playing with him?
Aye, me and Boney weren’t the best of mates off the pitch but we never took any of that on to the pitch on a Saturday. It was sometimes like we were telepathic and neither of us were selfish about our goals. Defenders used to fear us, Bobby Mann used to be scared of us and would always ask us which one of us would get a hat-trick against him this time. I’m surprised Boney never toe poked his way to the top level though.

Do you have a favourite goal in your time with Stirling?
Every goal I scored against East Fife…I hated Archibald (Steve), every time you would play against him he would say things like “I’ve got more in my back pocket than you do in your bank account”…what a **** he was.

What did you make of the Binos fans?
Superb. Really good bunch of supporters. I remember they weren’t really sure how to take me, and then I came of the bench and chipped Jim Leighton at Hibs, did the handstand and they seemed to take to me. They always gave good banter as well, especially when I was at Dundee, I don’t have a bad word to say about them.

How did the move to Dundee come about?
Well I was really enjoying my time at Stirling and Luton had come in for me, and everything had been agreed and Peter the chairman had agreed a price, and then the manager shafted me and my move. After that my heart wasn’t really in it and when Dundee came along it was too good an opportunity to miss.

What are you doing now?
Playing and assistant manager for Market Drayton Town in England, really enjoying it and we just missed out on getting to the FA Cup 1st round. Its hard to keep up now with all the young players doing Ronaldinho style tricks round you though. The standard is actually quite good and I think a lot of the players at this level wouldn’t look out of place in the Scottish 2nd and 3rd divisions.

Is management something you want to get involved with?
Well I’m going through my coaching badges just now, its not something I would totally rule out but I think I would much prefer to be involved as a striker coach or something similar, I’m too quiet to be a manager.

Are you still in contact with any of your old Albion team mates?

Just big Ronnie McQuilter, I see him now and again – he will come down and visit or I will head back up to Scotland and stay with him. He is a great guy.

What was the Killie 6-2 game like to play in?

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Never thought we would get a result like that, we always thought we had a wee chance but never a victory of that margin. I still go on about that result to folk down here. I know Bobby Williamson and used to give him some stick for that.

The Rangers game at Ibrox must have been something special as well?

Oh aye, to be honest I thought we were gonna get steamrollered by them, Mark Hateley was on fire then as well. They were 3-0 up and the Tags pulled a goal back, then once I got mine we really felt as though we were gonna do it. And then right at the end of the game its me and Joe MacLeod against Richard Gough and he goes and balloons the ball instead of squaring it…..I was raging at him for that and we argued about that going up the tunnel, but what a result it was.

What’s next for Stevie McCormick?
Hopefully just continue to do well at my coaching and with Market Drayton, and hopefully someone in Scotland will take a chance on me ha-ha..

Many thanks to Stevie McCormick for taking the time to do the interview with the Official Website and our contributor and we would like to wish the big man all the best down south and for the future.
