Stirling Albion FC Hat Trick Heroes

Following the amazing feat by Alex Williams who scored hat tricks in successive home matches for the club, we have printed a full list of the hat-trick heroes down the years.

Almost as interesting as the names that are included are some of the names that do NOT appear—no John Brogan, no Ally Graham, no John McQuade, no Charlie Gibson, no Gus McMillan . . . And there are many other prolific scorers who never managed to achieve the feat of three goals in one game.

The most goals scored by an Albion player in a single match is seven by David Thompson against Selkirk in the Scottish Cup back in 1984. The Binos won 20-0 that day—the biggest win by any British club in senior football throughout the whole 20th Century. Willie Irvine also managed to score five in that match.

Older fans may make a claim for George Henderson scoring nine goals in a game back in the 1940s. He did, but that was in a Stirlingshire Cup tie against Falkirk Amateurs (score 11-0) and does not count as a full senior match.

There are a few oddities amongst the list. John Butler’s hat trick at Berwick was witnessed by a few dozen Albion fans, none of whom knew who he was! Butler had signed on loan from St Mirren that morning but the paperwork was completed too late for inclusion in the morning papers.

In 1995/6 we recorded three hat tricks against Queen of the South. Stevie McCormick was responsible for two of them and Alex Bone scored the other.

Hat trick champion is George Henderson with no fewer than eleven during his three spells with the club.
