I started supporting the Binos on the 3rd September 1960, which was my first Albion game. I had pestered my Dad for months to take me. He had supported the club from the day they were founded. He and my Mum's cousin, Archie Blair, went every week. My Mum's uncle, James Ging was the first groundsman at Annfield, so supporting the Albion was inevitable, it was in my blood. It was a good start - we won 4-2 that day (had to look result up as I was quite young at the time. [Editors Note: The match was against Brechin City with a crowd of 1814]
I have had a few favourite players over the years. In the 60's tricky inside forwards Johnny Lawlor and Henry Hall were my idols. During the 70's Micky Lawson was up there, but for me Mattie McPhee's wing play lives long in the memory. Alex Smith's side of 76/77 were special, we had waited 12 years for promotion. They were strong defensively (a Smith trademark you might think), but they had plenty of skill scattered throughout the team. Both John Brogan and Kevin Drinkell's teams in the 90's were terrific. Drinkell/Stewart arguably put together the most entertaining Albion team I have seen in over 40 years.
Back in 1967 Albion played Celtic at Annfield and drew 1-1. The significance of this result didn't sink in till a few months later when Celtic were crowned kings of Europe. We had also beaten them the previous season at home 1-0. 'Glory Days'. Another memorable occasion was the Billy Bremner Testimonial game in 1973 - we lost 3-2 but it was a great game. In recent times I remember travelling in the supporters bus to Methill, January 1996 we won 3-0 (a freak result said a certain Mr. Archibald!!!). Not in my opinion, the team played brilliantly, big Stevie at his best. It was a great night, atmosphere, result - perfect. For me this was the game that swung promotion our way.
As well as that night in Methil I was no more prouder to be an Albion supporter than when we went to Ibrox a few years back, 3 - 0 down we fought back to 3 - 2 (If only Joe had managed to convert the final chance). The Albion support was tremendous singing non stop. Another proud day was when Brogan's troops received the 2nd Division trophy in 1991. I had brought my daughter to the game that day and her picture, with the team, was in all the papers that week and is still on the wall as you walk up to the Forthbank office.
The Albion have had a number of good managers over the years. The Drinkell/Stewart partnership produced the most exciting winning team. John Brogan was always a favourite with supporters. Alex Smith produced a number of good players in his time and did keep the team in the 1st division for 4 seasons. It is a pity he is remembered for his dull defensive displays.
My favourite ground has to be Annfield, before the Astroturf. (My Mum's Uncle James would turn in his grave if I'd said anyhing else.) I grew up there and made many friends. The thought of Albion playing down the slope in the 2nd half, always gave you hope of a win.
I don't envy the Albion management over the years. Like many supporters you think you can do better, but in reality I think you do need experience in the game.
People are always asking me why I continue to support the Albion. (It is even harder these days). However, although it defies reason it has over the years, given me colour, movement, humour, drama and a million memories. Long may it continue.
