I started supporting the Albion when I was twelve and in my first year at Stirling High. Myself, my brother and a few school friends started going along on Saturdays to Annfield. 'We've been together now for forty years and it don't seem a day to long'
My favourite player has to be Henry Hall, who was without a doubt the best player ever to wear the Albion colours. I probably have two favourite teams with the Albion. The first was the team that contained Henry Hall, Jim Kerry in the late sixties, followed by the Kevin Drinkell team that kept us in the first division a couple of seasons ago.
Best Albion home match ever was the game where we beat Motherwell 3-1 in the cup. They were first division we were second. I believe it was around 1967 or 1969. My memory's fading. I do remember 'Max Murray' scoring a marvelous goal. I did write the names of that team on an Albion flag and hang it on my bedroom wall for the rest of the season. Two away matches stick in my memory, both fairly recent too. The match at Montrose when Drinkell's team won the second division championship a few years ago, [the post match celebrations were great] and the match at Broadwood against Clyde when Stevie McCormack scored his 30th goal of the season while the Clyde players tried to kick him of the park. My most exciting match? I believe the year was 1968 when Sammy Baird was the manager. It was a league game against Celtic at Annfield and Baird put the team out in orange jerseys against Celtic to upset their supporters. Until that day I had never seen the Albion playing in orange and I don't recall ever having seen them in that colour since. We won 1-0 with Max Murray scoring the winner in the second half. One other match was a few years ago under Drinkell at Ibrox against Rangers when we came back from 3-0 down to 3-2 and could have drawn or even won the match with a bit more composure in the last ten minutes.
My best manager was Bob Shankly. He was the other Shankly at the other Annfield. He brought composure and style to the team
Forthbank is my favourite ground. We have to move with the times. All we need to have a great atmosphere at Forthbank is get the locals to come along, then move the Home support terrace to the other end of the park, so we can look at the hills if the game is poor.
How would I do as Manager? As someone who trains and develops managers I believe I would get on OK. You need to surround yourself with the correct people, have a specific objective in mind and work towards it. Too often at the Albion this has not been the case and we've had square pegs in round holes as a result, which never has and never will lead to success.
I've supported the Albion all my teenage and adult life. I now live permanently in Cambridge so I don't get to see them as often as I would like. I support Cambridge United down south and my company does some sponsorship for that club. I am currently trying to organise a pre-season friendly between the clubs. Ray Stewart [Albion] and Roy McFarland [Cambridge] have both told me they would be keen to get it organised so I'm working on it and hoping to have a match arranged before the start of the season. Ray Stewart has asked me to drop him a line in January 2001 to progress the idea as he would like to get the team together for a few days to develop camaraderie and team spirit.
