Stirling 1 Arbroath 1

Stirling 1 Arbroath 1

Arbroath clinched the Ladbrokes League 2 title despite being held by the Binos as rivals Forfar slumped to a surprise 4-2 home defeat to Annan.

It was the third successive draw between the teams and means we finish the season in sixth place while Dick Campbell’s men can look forward to life in League 1.

The Red Lichties were backed by an 1,175-strong travelling support on a day of glorious sunshine and the trophy was delivered in a helicopter shortly after full-time.

Stirling can be proud of their performance on the final day of the season as we came close to inflicting Arbroath’s first away league defeat since September.

Binos boss Dave Mackay was able to recall Willie Robertson after a three-month absence through injury but Ross Smith, Sean Dickson and Andy Little were among those sidelined. There was a place on the bench for U20 winger Alberto Vezza and he made his debut as a substitute towards the end.

Stirling started positively and created a couple of good chances, only to fall behind in five minutes when Martin Scott got above Conor Quigley to head in Bobby Linn’s cross.

Chris Smith then did well to tip a Mark Whatley drive on to the top of the bar before the visitors were awarded a penalty in 37 minutes. Andy Black lunged in on Linn but Steven Doris fired his kick against the left-hand post.

Forfar were 3-1 down at the break but Arbroath looked nervous in the second half and you could sense an equaliser was coming.

Ross Kavanagh was denied by Ricky Gomes when clean through and Robertson tested the keeper before the midfielder went down under a challenge from Omar Kader in 76 minutes and Blair Henderson notched his 12th goal of the season with his sixth successful penalty out of six.

On-loan Hearts winger Callumn Morrison, on as sub, almost won it six minutes from time when he raced clear but he was unlucky to see his shot come back off the post as a compelling contest ended all square and the Arbroath celebrations began.

Stirling Albion: C Smith, McGeachie, Quigley, Black, Caddis, Forsyth, McMullan (Bikey 64), Robertson (Morrison 77), Henderson (Vezza 77), D Smith, Kavanagh. Subs (not used): Binnie (GK), McLaren, Mills, Colquhoun.
