Jordan McGregor scored his first goal for the club as we edged out Elgin on a dreich afternoon at Forthbank to stay fifth in the Ladbrokes League 2 table.
The visitors will feel they should have left with a point but centre-half McGregor’s late header earned us a third win of the season over Gavin Price’s side.
Binos boss Kevin Rutkiewicz was without Danny Jardine, Ross McGeachie, Dylan Mackin, Jason Marr and Max Wright through injury but Neil McLaughlin returned to the side and youngsters Cammy Murray – who made his debut last week – and Will Greenhorn were on the bench.
Much of the first-half action was shoehorned into a frantic five-minute spell which saw Darren Smith and Dom Docherty thwarted by keeper Kyle Gourlay while Calum Ferrie twice came to the rescue when Kane Hester looked set to give the Black & Whites the lead.
The opener came after 34 minutes in somewhat fortuitous circumstances. Smith’s effort was blocked by Gourlay but the ball rebounded off the striker’s chest and bounced into the net for his ninth goal of the campaign.
Elgin were level five minutes later when Ross MacIver, on loan from Ross County, followed up to score from close range after Ferrie had parried a powerful drive from Brian Cameron.
There wasn’t too much happening in an untidy second half, with only pride at stake for both sides in front of our lowest league crowd of the season of 413, but McGregor and Elgin’s Chris McLeish both came close with headers.
A draw was looking likely and would have been a fair enough outcome but McGregor met Jordan Allan’s free kick and sent a header into the net as we made it seven points from the last nine and inflicted Elgin’s fifth straight defeat.
We have four games still to play, with a trip to play play-off bound Annan Athletic at Galabank next up before Cowdenbeath visit Forthbank in a fortnight.
