Darren Smith became the first player in the SPFL to score 20 league goals this season as we moved three points clear in fourth place.
It was our third straight success at Forthbank and ended Elgin’s recent three-game winning streak in the process. Dave Mackay’s men fully merited all three points – this was a good all-round performance and was a big boost as we chase a play-off place.
Central defender Darren Barr made his debut after signing from Morton as Ross Smith dropped to the bench while Neil McLaughlin made way for Ross Kavanagh. Andy Little, Steven Noble and Sean Dickson again missed out through injury.
Smith opened the scoring after just 10 minutes, with a cool finish into the corner after a nice passage of play involving MacDonald and impressive on-loan St Johnstone midfielder Danny Jardine.
Elgin came more into things but we struck again just after the half-hour mark with a terrific goal on the counter attack. MacDonald released Ross McGeachie on the right and the defender picked out Smith with a perfect cross for the ex-Motherwell man to confidently sweep the ball beyond Brett Long for his 23rd goal of the season in all competitions.
We had a lucky escape a few minutes later when the ball was cleared off the line following a corner but overall we limited Gavin Price’s team to few clear openings.
The third goal arrived in 71 minutes and again there was an impressive build-up. Lee Hamilton found Kavanagh with a superb pass and the forward’s cross from the left was nodded in by MacDonald from close range for his fifth goal of the season.
City, who drew 2-2 here in September, got one back seven minutes from time when Jordan Allan’s 25-yarder took a big deflection and gave Cammy Binnie no chance.
Next up for the Binos is a trip to play Cowdenbeath at Central Park on Saturday February 10.
