Falkirk preview

The new season gets under way on Saturday with a Betfred Cup Group A tie away to local rivals Falkirk, with Inverness Caley Thistle, Brechin and Forfar also in our section.

The eight group winners and four best runners-up are joined in the last 16 on August 8/9 by Celtic, Aberdeen, Rangers and St Johnstone.

Team news: Striker Andy Little hasn’t been involved in pre-season and won’t feature as he continues his recovery from injury but new signings Steven Noble (Peterhead), Peter MacDonald (Clyde), Callumn Morrison (Hearts, loan) and Ewan McNeil (Clyde) could feature.

Previous meetings: We shocked Falkirk 1-0 at Forthbank on matchday one of last season’s Betfred Cup but this is our first visit to the Falkirk Stadium since a 3-0 Challenge Cup defeat in July 2012. Our last win away to the Bairns was 2-1 at Brockville in the old First Division in 1974/75.

Opponents: Falkirk lost out to Dundee United in the play-offs last season after finishing runners-up to Hibernian in the Championship. Bairns boss Peter Houston has brought in four new players – goalkeepers David Mitchell (Dundee) and Robbie Mutch (Aberdeen), midfielder Alex Harris (Hibernian) and striker Rory Loy (Dundee).

Format: A reminder that all drawn games in the group stage go straight to penalties, with the winners receiving a bonus point.

Referee: David Lowe

Admission: Adults £10, concessions £5, U16s free

Weather: Not looking great!
