Motherwell came out on top in a Forthbank friendly played on an immaculate surface but there was plenty of encouragement for Binos boss Dave Mackay.
A stunning strike from Shaun Tuton and a simple finish from Ryan Bowman saw Stephen Robinson’s men ease to victory but we caused our Premiership opponents plenty of problems in the first half.
Albion included new signings Steven Noble and Peter MacDonald, with Lee Hamilton playing at right-back as a trialist after leaving Berwick, in our first friendly.
The teams have met rarely in recent times – we were last in the same division in 1980/81 – and haven’t played a competitive match since Motherwell won a Scottish Cup last-16 tie 2-0 at Fir Park in February 1999.
The Steelmen were without striker Louis Moult but included a number of their new signings and were backed by a 600-strong travelling support.
Darren Smith twice set up MacDonald before the break but the ex-Clyde man failed to hit the target when he might have expected to score and Smith himself had a good opportunity but his shot was too straight and Russell Griffiths saved.
Motherwell broke the deadlock in style 10 minutes before half-time when trialist Tuton, previously with Barnsley, smacked a superb shot into the corner from 20 yards.
The visitors made 10 changes at the break and trialist Bira Dembele, whose last club was Barnet, forced a good save from Cammy Binnie with a header from a corner before Chris Cadden made space on the right and picked out Ryan Bowman for a simple finish on 58 minutes.
Stirling made seven changes during the second half, including trialists Jack McCue, John Henderson, a striker from the Junior ranks, and Cammy McClair, who was previously with Dunfermline, but the Premiership side were in control now and Bowman and Cadden both had good chances to add a third goal.
