Arbroath preview

We bring down the curtain on our Ladbrokes League 2 campaign at home to leaders Arbroath on Saturday.

The Red Lichties will be backed by a big travelling support as they seek to clinch the title and the SPFL have confirmed a helicopter will deliver the trophy to Forthbank or Station Park – where second-placed Forfar face Annan – shortly after full-time.

Dave Mackay’s men, meanwhile, are aiming to prevent a promotion party and bow out on a high after losing 1-0 to Edinburgh City last weekend.

Team news: Midfielder Willie Robertson could return after three months out with a knee injury. Defender Ross Smith trained this week but has missed the last six matches and might not be risked. Jack McCue, Sean Dickson, Darren Petrie and Andy Little remain sidelined but on-loan Rangers winger Josh Jeffries, ruled out last week, scored the winner for his parent club in an U20 game against Motherwell on Thursday.

Previous meetings: Arbroath won 5-3 at a sun-kissed Gayfield back in August but the two meetings since then have both ended all square. We fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Forthbank in November thanks to a late, late double from Sean Dickson – the second a stunning 20-yard volley. It was 1-1 at Gayfield in February when Darren Smith’s 58th-minute goal was quickly cancelled out by ex-Bino Steven Doris, who was last weekend voted Player of the Year by the Arbroath supporters.

Opponents: Forfar had been top of League 2 since August 20th but last week’s 1-1 draw at bottom club Cowdenbeath allowed Arbroath to move a point clear at the summit thanks to Ryan McCord’s hat-trick in a 3-2 Gayfield win over Elgin. The Red Lichties have lost just once on their travels in League 2 this season and that was way back in September, against Clyde at Broadwood.
