Stirling 0 Forfar 3

Forfar ended our six-game winning run with a comfortable victory at Forthbank to stay a point clear of Arbroath at the top of the Ladbrokes League 2 table.

Gary Bollan’s side hadn’t won any of their previous seven matches but proved much too strong on the day to leave us six points adrift of the play-offs with five matches remaining.

Binos boss Dave Mackay had to do without suspended duo Ross McGeachie and Sean Dickson while Ross Smith, Ross McMillan, Willie Robertson, Jack McCue and Calvin Colquhoun were again ruled out through injury. Ross Forsyth, Connor McMullan, Callumn Morrison and Dylan Nguene Bikey, on loan from Hearts, all started.

Forfar almost went ahead in 11 minutes when Thomas O’Brien’s header hit the bar and Chris Smith made a stunning save to keep out Michael Travis’ follow-up. The opener came just two minutes later when Gavin Swankie got away from Liam Caddis and crossed for Jim Lister to score from close range.

Ross Kavanagh fired just wide as we chased an equaliser but that was one of the few chances we created in the game. Darren Smith was denied by Grant Adam in the second half but Bikey was starved of meaningful service and was a peripheral figure.

Forfar, who host Arbroath next weekend, bossed much of the match and doubled their lead in 26 minutes when Danny Denholm drilled the ball into the corner from outside the box after McMullan had conceded possession.

Any hope of a comeback was over early in the second half when more poor defending allowed Mullen to bundle the ball home following a free-kick.

Swankie almost added a fourth goal late on but his effort hit the bar as our best winning run for 10 years ended with a whimper.
