Ross Kavanagh’s second goal of the season earned us a crucial win at Forthbank as Stirling moved eight points clear of bottom club Cowdenbeath.

The 19-year-old scored after 16 minutes, latching on to a Darren Smith pass and getting the better of a defender before cutting inside to beat keeper Andrew Stobie with a fine finish.

It was Kavanagh’s first start since our last win – the 3-0 defeat of Clyde on January 7 – after several weeks on the sidelines with an ankle injury in a game that went ahead after a 9.30am inspection.

Binos boss Dave Mackay was without eight players through injury – Ross Forsyth, Ross McMillan, Frazer Wright, Jack McCue, Willie Robertson, Darren Petrie, Callumn Morrison and Josh Jeffries all missed out. Ross McGeachie moved into the centre of defence and there was a place among the subs for Connor McMullan from the U20 squad.

Dean Cummings had a header saved by Chris Smith before we took the lead and we came close to a second goal through Connor McLaren’s free-kick and a spectacular 40-yard effort from Blair Henderson that was clawed away by keeper Andrew Stobie.

City, without injured top scorer Ouzy See, did most of the pressing after the break and deserved a draw on the balance of play but we limited them to few clear-cut chances.

Ryan Porteous fired over from close range then Josh Walker’s free-kick was touched on to the post by Chris Smith as we held on to climb above Clyde and into seventh place.

Ex-Ayr winger Andrew Johnstone, fielded as a trialist, and former Rangers striker Andy Little showed up well when they came on but we didn’t create too much of note in the second half as a fifth clean sheet of the season in League 2 saw us over the line.
