Edinburgh City claimed a deserved win at Meadowbank Stadium to send Stirling to the bottom of the Ladbrokes League 2 table.
It was a desperately disappointing afternoon in the capital as we went down to our second away defeat in the space of five days following Tuesday’s 3-2 loss at Berwick.
Binos boss Dave Mackay made four changes from midweek – Ross Forsyth, Ross Smith, Sean Dickson and Marc McKenzie replaced Scott Davidson, Darren Petrie (suspended), Willie Robertson and Ross Kavanagh.
It was our first visit to this venue since a 1-0 Scottish Cup win exactly a decade ago while it finished 1-1 between the teams at Forthbank in September. That was City’s first point of the season but they have now lost just one of their last 10 games in all competitions.
Neither keeper had too much to do in the first half but Gary Jardine’s men made the breakthrough in 28 minutes when Ouzy See finished off a fine move with a low shot into the corner.
McKenzie was unlucky not to equalise soon after when his 30-yard free kick crashed back off the post with keeper Andrew Stobie beaten.
Stirling switched to a 4-4-2 formation for the second half but struggled to create anything of note against a City side who have given little away in recent weeks.
Chris Smith made a smart save to deny Aaron Dunsmore and did well to keep out a Marc Laird header from the corner that followed as the hosts continued to be the better team.
It looked as if one goal would be enough for the Lowland League champions but they grabbed a second with three minutes left when sub Dougie Gair latched on to a superb through ball and found the net with an emphatic finish from 20 yards.
This defeat, coupled with a win for Montrose over Clyde, means we are two points adrift at the bottom going into next weekend’s home game against Annan.
