It’s football for a fiver again at Forthbank on Tuesday as we begin our IRN-BRU Cup campaign against Heart of Midlothian Colts, kick-off 7.45pm.
The match will be played to a finish on the night, with extra time and penalties if required. The draw for the second round is likely to take place later this week, with ties scheduled for August 16/17.
Team news: Goalkeeper Chris Smith misses out after suffering concussion in Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at St Johnstone so Cammy Binnie is set to play. The game is likely to come too soon for Ross McGeachie and Darren Petrie but Aurelien Mazel could be added to the squad.
Challenge Cup: This competition began life as the SFL Centenary Cup in 1990/91 and we have twice reached the semi-finals – in 1995/96 and 1999/00. We lost 3-2 away to Elgin City in last season’s first round.
Opponents: Hearts’ U20, who are coached by former Rangers and Dundee United striker Jon Daly, reached the Youth Cup final last season but were beaten by Motherwell. Unlike in the Development League, in which the Jam Tarts finished 12th out of 17, over-age players are not permitted in the IRN-BRU Cup so Premiership U20 teams will only be able to field those born on or after 1.1.97.
Past meetings: We beat Hearts 2-1 at Forthbank to win the Supporters Direct Cup last July. The most recent competitive meeting between the teams was in August 2007 when we lost 2-0 at Forthbank in a League Cup second-round tie.
