Our final home game of the season saw Stuart McLaren’s men complete a Forthbank double over Annan to dent the play-off hopes of the visitors.
Goals from U20 team graduates Moses Olanrewaju and Ross Kavanagh saw us lead 2-0 before Josh Todd pulled one back late on.
The starting XI showed five changes to the side that drew 1-1 at Montrose last week. Darren Smith (injured) Ross McMillan (ill), Ross McGeachie, Craig Comrie and Chris Smith dropped out and were replaced by David Verlaque, Ross Smith, Olanrewaju, Lewis McLear and Cammy Binnie.
There was a debut as a late substitute for U20 midfielder Jordan Herron, who was part of the squad presented with the Development League East trophy before the game.
We had beaten Annan 1-0 here just before Christmas when they were league leaders but the Galabankies have now dropped out of the top four in a four-way battle for three play-off places also involving Clyde, Elgin and Queen’s Park.
Olanrewaju gave us the lead after just seven minutes. Sean Dickson began the move with a perfect pass to Steven Doris, who teed up the winger to fire a low shot beyond Jordan Hart for his second goal of the season.
The visitors have failed to score in only one game this season and came close to equalising through Peter Weatherson before Verlaque was denied by a goal-line clearance early in the second half.
We doubled our advantage when U20 top scorer Kavanagh, just on as a sub, was played in by Doris and he recovered from a poor first touch to drill the ball past Hart for his first senior goal.
Annan thought they had pulled one back when substitute Smart Osadolor converted a cross but it was clear he had punched the ball into the net. Referee Mike Taylor appeared to initially award the goal before ruling it out after consulting with his assistant and booking Osadolor.
The Galabankies scored with four minutes left when the ball was cut back for Todd to find the net but we held on to make it five games without defeat.
