Substitute Craig Beattie grabbed a last-minute equaliser as we drew our third game in a row.
The former Ayr forward fired home a terrific free-kick to claim his sixth goal of the season but it wasn’t enough to prevent us from slipping to seventh in Ladbrokes League 2.
We had beaten Montrose three times this season but this was a match Paul Hegarty’s team should have won. They missed a number of good chances in the first half but it looked as if Graham Webster’s 58th-minute goal would be enough until Beattie struck.
Binos boss Stuart McLaren was again without injured pair Scot Buist and Moses Olanrewaju in a team that showed one change from the side that drew 0-0 with Elgin last week – Craig Comrie came in for Lewis McLear but he only lasted 45 minutes before Beattie took his place.
Montrose were without a win in five games but were impressive in the first half. Top scorer Gary Fraser could have scored inside two minutes but his close-range effort was saved then Chris Smith denied Ross Campbell, who might have done better.
The breakthrough should have come midway through the first half when Terry Masson picked out Fraser – he had time and space in the box but Smith pulled off a fine save and ex-Bino Chris Templeman sent a header just over from the corner.
We struggled to test home keeper Jordan Millar before the break and almost fell behind just after the restart when the ball broke off Fraser and rolled wide.
The Gable Endies took a deserved lead when Webster turned Scott Davidson and fired a superb shot beyond Chris Smith and in off the post from just outside the box.
Millar made a good block to keep out a low shot from Steven Doris as we sought an equaliser and when Doris was fouled some 25 yards out it allowed Beattie to take advantage when the keeper showed him too much of the right-hand side of the goal.
