As you will know, unlike some other Club Academy Scotland clubs, Stirling Albion FC has supported our players’ participation in schools’ football at local, regional and national level.
This has resulted in some great development opportunities for the SAFC youth players and once again this season a good number of players are successfully involved.
On Wednesday November 11, the Forth Valley Schools FA select team reached the quarter-final stage of the Scottish Schools FA Senior National Trophy – a competition for local associations throughout the country.
Last season FVSFA won this event for the first time in 14 years and Stirling Albion FC were well represented in that winning team. Cammy Binnie, Greg Hurst, Conor McKenzie, Kyle Banner, Duncan Kilgannon, Alan Murray, Sam Davidson, Daniel Wilcox and Connor Dickson all played for the squad.
This season FVSFA have won all three of their sectional qualifying games and the following Albion youngsters have all played a part – Ronan Fallens, Joseph Bell, Kyle Banner, George Stanger, Connor McMullan, Morgan Reid, Jack Wardrope, Alan Murray, Callum MacDonald and Duncan Kilgannon. The team will now be likely to play Lothian Schools FA in a home quarter-final tie in January.
The sectional games also serve as trial opportunities for selection to the Scottish FA international squad that competes for the Centenary Shield – the British Schools International Championship which also features the Republic of Ireland.
This season’s Stirling Albion players have hopefully caught the eye of selectors and could be involved in the upcoming trials later this month. This year’s possibles would hope to join a long list of Stirling Albion FC home-grown talent who have earned an SSFA international cap.
In recent seasons this has included Daniel Wilcox, Conor McKenzie (two seasons), Lee Hamilton, Ross McGeachie, Steven Forbes, Michael McAdam, Jamie Clark, Liam Corr (two seasons), Andy Hunter, Don Morrison, Magnus Neilson and Greg Munn (two seasons).
Good luck to this year’s group of talented Stirling Albion players in representing Forth Valley Schools’ FA and – who knows – maybe even the Scottish Schools’ FA.
