Despite the narrow 2-1 margin of victory, it is fair to say that our under 20 team completely outplayed their Stenhousemuir counterparts, who fielded the maximum number of over-age players (five), throughout the 90 minutes at Ochilview on Tuesday night.
Ross Kavanagh scored both our goals – the first, to put us ahead early in the first half, from a neat back-heel flick following an electrifying run and superb cross from Tommy McAllister and the second, minutes after Stenhousemuir had equalised early in the second half, from a penalty awarded for deliberate handball.
Sam Davidson shone throughout, showing great composure on the ball. He also smacked a thunderbolt from the edge of the box against the crossbar and brought out a fine save from the keeper with a similar shot that was bound for the top corner.
Scott Davidson and David Verlaque strolled through the 90 minutes at the heart of our defence and behind them Cammy Binnie in goal dealt comfortably with the limited activity that came his way. He had no chance with Stennie’s equaliser, an excellent shot from 12 yards, that provided them with their solitary noteworthy contribution.
Although some have been singled out for individual praise, this was a team performance, with every player contributing fully and delivering just reward for themselves and our Coaches, Ross Forsyth and Andy Todd, for their hard work.
Last night’s result from Station Park (Forfar 3 Alloa 1) sees us sit top of the table on 10 points, three clear of Alloa Athletic in second.
