Skipper Ross McMillan headed a 69th-minute winner as 10-man Stirling earned back-to-back victories for the first time since the play-offs against Annan in May 2014.
Ross McGeachie was sent off for denying Gary Fraser a clear goalscoring opportunity just three minutes into the second half but keeper Chris Smith dived to his left to keep out Ross McCord’s penalty.
We showed terrific spirit and work ethic despite the numerical disadvantage to earn a first shut-out in more than 12 months – the previous one was a 0-0 draw at Airdrie on August 30 last year.
Binos boss Stuart McLaren named an unchanged team for the third game in a row as we looked to build on a 3-2 win at East Stirlingshire, against a Montrose side who arrived at Forthbank having won all three home games but had lost twice on the road.
There was a place on the bench for U20 striker Sam Davidson and Mark Lamont was among the substitutes as a trialist. Frenchman Aurelien Mazel made his debut as a late sub.
Paul Hegarty’s team looked the more likely to score in a first half short on clear-cut chances but Smith saved well from Fraser and the visitors failed to make the most of some good openings.
McGeachie saw red early in the second half in what proved to be a big turning point. McCord failed from the spot and thereafter we were the more accomplished team.
Steven Doris came close with a lob that beat keeper Ross Salmon but landed on the roof of the net then, after Graham Webster had nodded a Ross Campbell cross just wide at the other end, McMillan scored for the second week running with a terrific header from a Ross Forsyth free-kick.
The closing stages produced a flurry of yellow cards but we held out fairly comfortably to earn a vital three points ahead of next week’s trip to Arbroath.
