Stirling Albion take on Airdrieonians at Forthbank in the first round of the Scottish League Cup on Saturday, bidding to end a barren run that has seen us suffer first-round exits in each of the last seven seasons.
A place in Monday’s second-round draw – which takes place at Hampden at 2.30pm – is the reward on offer for ourselves or Gary Bollan’s League 1 side. Extra time and penalties will settle the tie if required.
Team news: Defenders Kevin McKinlay and Ross McMillan remain out and midfielder Darren Lee Smith is also still sidelined but striker Steven Doris is available after missing the 3-2 defeat at Elgin. Defender Ross McGeachie, fit enough only for the bench last week, remains a doubt.
Opponents: Airdrie just missed out on the play-offs last season and will be keen to bounce back from a 3-1 defeat at Annan in the Petrofac Training Cup. The Diamonds have added several new players of the summer: Neil Parry (Albion Rovers), Alan Lithgow (Stenhousemuir), Sean Crighton (Morton), David Van Zanten (Dumbarton), Caolan McAleer (East Fife), David Cox (Peterhead), Nico Sumsky (Hamilton Accies, loan), Taylor Morgan (Ostersunds, loan) and Kevin McBride (Dundee).
Past meetings: We met four times in League 1 last season – we drew 0-0 at the Excelsior Stadium in August and 2-2 at Forthbank in October but Airdrie won the other two matches. They also thrashed us 5-0 when we crossed paths in the first round of the League Cup in 2011/12.
