We face a huge game against Ayr United at Forthbank on Saturday. The Honest Men are six points ahead of us in ninth place, and also have a game in hand. We are seeking our first home victory in League 1 while Ayr’s last win was 1-0 against Morton at Cappielow in mid-October.
Team news: Skipper Chris Smith returns after a one-match ban but Steven Doris, Graham Weir and Darren Lee Smith remain on the injury list, although the latter is expected to be available for selection by the end of the month. U20 players Chris Paton and Jordan Herron are set to be included in the squad.
Opponents: New manager Ian McCall has made a number of signings since replacing Mark Roberts last month. Right-back Craig Murray has joined on loan from Aberdeen, central defender Morgyn Neill was a loan signing from Motherwell and midfielder David Robertson was recently snapped up from Livingston. Left-back Adam Blakeman arrived from Conference North side Hyde and striker Jordan Preston was brought in on loan from Blackburn Rovers.
Past meetings: Ayr ran out comfortable 3-1 winners when the sides met at Forthbank back in August and it was 2-2 at Somerset Park just before Christmas, Craig Beattie scoring in the last minute after a Steven Doris double had overturned Alan Forrest’s opener. Prior to this season, we hadn’t met on league business since 2008/09 – our last win against Ayr was 2-0 at Forthbank in January 2009 thanks to goals from Martin Grehan and Ryan McCord.
