Stirling Albion are on William Hill Scottish Cup third-round duty on Saturday as we make the journey to Ayrshire to take on Hurlford United, with a 2pm kick-off at Blair Park.
Darren Smith and Ross Forsyth, who were in charge for last week’s 2-2 draw with Airdrie, will again take the team as we move closer to naming a replacement for former manager Greig McDonald.
Team news: Midfielder Willie Robertson completes a two-match ban following his red card against Stenhousemuir and striker Sandy Cunningham is also suspended after being sent off in our 3-2 defeat in last season’s fourth round at Alloa. Lewis Coult and Craig Comrie remain out and Darren Lee Smith is also sidelined after picking a knock but David McClune returns to the squad.
Opponents: Managed by former Stranraer and Ayr midfielder Darren Henderson, Hurlford United qualified for the Scottish Cup after beating Glenafton 3-0 in the Junior Cup final at Rugby Park. They began their defence of that trophy with a 3-1 win at Rosyth last weekend and will find out their third-round opponents on Tuesday. In this season’s Scottish Cup, Hurlford saw off Edinburgh University 5-0 in a preliminary round replay then thrashed Clachnacuddin 7-1 in Inverness. They defeated Inverurie Locos 3-0 away from home in the second round on October 4. The Ford have won two, drawn two and lost one of their five West Region Super League games so far.
Scottish Cup: We have never gone beyond the quarter-finals, a stage we last reached when we lost 1-0 to Clydebank in a replay in 1989/90. Last season we knocked out Whitehill Welfare, in a replay, and Turriff United before losing to Alloa. Our only previous encounter with Junior opponents in the Scottish Cup was in 2009/10 when we were fortunate to beat Auchinleck Talbot 2-1 at Forthbank. We then accounted for Albion Rovers before crashing 9-0 at Ross County in the last 16!
