Late goals from Shaun Byrne and substitute Faissal El Bakhtaoui gave Dunfermline victory in the first meeting between the teams since March 2011.
We ended the game with 10 men after central defender Craig Wedderburn saw red for picking up his second booking with six minutes left.
The result keeps the Pars second in the table behind League 1 leaders Forfar while we stay in ninth place, just ahead of Airdrie – who visit Forthbank later this month.
Greig McDonald’s men complete the first quarter against Morton at Cappielow next weekend and will take heart from a solid performance against the full-time Pars.
The visitors had more of the ball and created the better chances, and ultimately deserved their win, but we made life difficult for the odds-on title favourites.
McDonald made three changes to the team beaten 2-0 at Stranraer – Darren Smith, Darren Lee Smith and Gordon Smith made way for Lewis Coult, Sandy Cunningham and Graham Weir.
Gozie Ugwu and Andy Stirling missed good chances for the Pars before former Ayr striker Michael Moffat blazed wide with just Callum Reidford to beat after a fine move.
We had a better spell as half-time approached and a penalty appeal for handball was turned down before Chris Smith sent a header into the side netting.
Dunfermline enjoyed lots of the ball after the break and Ugwu should have scored with a header but we posted a warning when Weir forced a good save from Ryan Scully.
The Pars responded and Josh Falkingham rattled a shot against the inside of the post before the deadlock was broken in 80 minutes when Byrne took a pass and swept the ball into the corner.
Wedderburn was dismissed after bringing down El Bakhtaoui and the French-Moroccan sealed the win in stoppage time, scoring from close range after the ball had been diverted into his path.
