First-half goals from Jamie Longworth and Stephen Stirling earned Stranraer victory at Stair Park as we suffered our first away league defeat since March.
We produced a much-improved second-half performance but failed to take the chances that came our way and had a couple of penalty appeals turned down as Stevie Aitken’s team saw the game out.
Albion have slipped to ninth in the table ahead of Saturday’s game at home to League 1 title favourites Dunfermline and we end the first quarter at Morton on October 11.
This was our first visit to Stranraer since we won an amazing match 8-2 in January 2009 and the teams were level in the table with six points from six games.
We were again without Phil Johnston and Craig Comrie while Darren Lee Smith returned to the side in place of the injured Graham Weir as we looked to build on the comeback in the 2-2 draw with Forfar.
Stranraer took the lead inside three minutes when we failed to deal with a cross from the left wing and, after Craig Malcolm had failed to convert from close range, Longworth made no mistake.
The Blues hit the bar with a header before doubling their advantage in 25 minutes. Former Dunfermline winger Willie Gibson was causing us plenty of problems and we were caught out at a set-piece when he teed up Stirling to smash the ball home from the edge of the box.
Greig McDonald’s men, with Steven Doris always a threat going forward, rallied after the break. Chris Smith and Gordon Smith had penalty shouts waved away, Darren Lee Smith forced a good save from David Mitchell and James Creaney hammered a shot just too high but, for the third time in four games, we failed to find the net.
