Rory McAllister grabbed a late equaliser to deny Albion a winning start on the opening day of the League 1 season.
Gordon Smith gave us the lead early in the second half with a fine finish but Scotland’s top scorer from last year earned the Blue Toon a point in a keenly-contested encounter at Balmoor.
It was an encouraging start to life in a higher division, although a nasty-looking injury to Steven Doris in the closing stages is a cause for concern.
Albion showed three changes from the team that lost 1-0 to Alloa in the League Cup, with Greg Paterson, Lewis Coult and Graham Weir replacing Callum Reidford, Darren Lee Smith and Dale Fulton.
Willie Robertson was suspended and the game came too soon for Ross McGeachie and David McClune. Peterhead were without banned duo Andy Rodgers and Graeme Sharp.
The Blue Toon were presented with the League 2 championship flag before kick-off, four months after receiving the trophy and being beaten 4-0 by the Binos.
Chances were few in the opening stages but we almost took the lead in 31 minutes when Doris did well on the right flank and picked out Gordon Smith, whose shot was brilliantly saved by Graeme Smith.
At the other end, our defence offered McAllister little cheer but he had an effort diverted for a corner before we had a big penalty appeal turned down. Doris appeared to be bundled over in the box but referee George Salmond waved play on.
The deadlock was broken in 55 minutes when Coult played in Gordon Smith and he beat namesake Graeme with a composed finish for his third goal of the season.
With Peterhead struggling to create clear-cut chances, it looked as if one goal might be enough but we were pushed back as the game wore on and were undone with five minutes to go.
A long pass through the middle tempted Paterson to come off his line but McAllister got there first and guided the ball into the net.
We remain unbeaten on the opening day since losing 2-1 to Brechin in 2008 and this was a good start as we prepare to welcome Ayr United to Forthbank on Saturday.
