We begin our League 1 campaign with a trip to play fellow promoted side Peterhead at Balmoor on Saturday – Jim McInally’s men will be presented with the championship flag before kick-off. We are unbeaten on the opening day of the league season since losing 2-1 against Brechin in 2008 – when a certain Darren Smith scored a late winner at Glebe Park!
Team news: Midfielder Willie Robertson is suspended after being sent off in the recent Stirlingshire Cup tie at Stenhousemuir. Ross McGeachie and David McClune remain out but Graham Weir returns and skipper Darren Smith could also make the squad. Peterhead are without banned duo Andy Rodgers and Graeme Sharp but they have been given a massive boost after top scorer Rory McAllister this week signed a new contract until 2017.
Match facts: Peterhead kicked off their new campaign with a 3-0 win at Montrose in the Petrofac Training Cup but were beaten 4-0 by Dundee in the League Cup. We started with a 3-0 victory at Elgin before being edged out 1-0 at Alloa last weekend. We have won our last three opening league games against East Fife (1-0), Annan (5-1) and Montrose (2-1).
Past meetings: We won 4-0 on our last visit to Balmoor at the end of April thanks to goals from Craig Comrie (2), David Weatherston and Graham Weir. A Rory McAllister hat-trick condemned us to a 3-1 defeat on our previous visit just before Christmas. It was also a win apiece at Forthbank last season – we won 2-0 in August but lost 2-1 in February. We drew both games at Balmoor in 2012/13.
