We make the short journey to Alloa on Saturday in the first round of the League Cup. Extra time and penalties, if required, will settle the tie if the scores are level after 90 minutes. This is part one of a local derby double header – we meet again in round two of the Petrofac Training Cup at Forthbank on Tuesday August 19.
Team news: New signing Willie Robertson, who was with Alloa last season, is added to the squad but Graham Weir, David McClune, Sandy Cunningham and Ross McGeachie are all out.
Opponents: Alloa finished eighth in the Championship last season, with Barry Smith taking over as manager when Paul Hartley surprisingly resigned in January. The Wasps beat Arbroath 4-1 at Gayfield in the first round of the Petrofac Training Cup last weekend, helped by a hat-trick from summer signing Greig Spence.
Fellow forward Liam Buchanan also moved to Recreation Park recently and Smith this week added former Motherwell midfielder Steven Hetherington to his squad. Highly-rated keeper Scott Bain has joined Dundee but former Binos Michael Doyle and Ryan McCord remain at the club and Mark Docherty returns after a spell with Stranraer. David Weatherston moved from Forthbank during the summer.
Past meetings: We lost 3-2 in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup at Recreation Park at the end of November, with Jordan White and Graham Weir scoring our goals on a day when Sandy Cunningham was sent off early on.
The last League Cup encounter was back in August 1988 when we won 4-2 during Jim Fleeting’s time as manager. Alloa won all four games in Division Two in 2009/10 but we pipped the Wasps to the title on goal difference. Our last victory in this fixture was 3-2 at Recreation Park in March 2009.
League Cup facts: We lost 3-0 to Hamilton Accies in the first round 12 months ago and the competition has not been kind to us in recent years. Albion’s last League Cup win was 1-0 at Brechin in August 2007 when David McKenna got the goal but we lost 2-0 at home to Hearts in round two. Our best run came in 1961/62 when we lost 2-1 to Hearts in the semi-finals.
Referee: Colin Steven
Admission: £16 for adults and £8 concessions. Albion fans should use turnstiles 9-12 on Hilton Road.
Second-round draw: Will take place next week, details to be confirmed. Second-round ties are due to be played on the midweek of August 26/27.
Next up: Peterhead at Balmoor in our opening League 1 game on August 9.
