It’s here! Ten weeks after our memorable play-off win at East Fife, season 2014/15 begins on Saturday with a trip to Borough Briggs to play Elgin City in the first round of the Petrofac Training Cup. Extra time and penalties will settle the tie if the scores are level after 90 minutes.
Team news: The game comes too soon for midfield duo David McClune (calf knock) and Darren Smith (hamstring strain) and there are doubts over Graham Weir and Ross McGeachie. Former Alloa left-back James Creaney is added to the squad after putting pen to paper on Thursday night to become our seventh summer signing.
Opponents: Elgin might have finished ninth in League 2 last season but they were one of the highest-scoring sides in the division – only Annan, Peterhead and Berwick were more prolific. Boss Barry Wilson has managed to keep hold of forwards Craig Gunn, Shane Sutherland and Dennis Wyness and has brought in keeper Michael Fraser, although defender Sean Crighton has joined Morton.
Last season: We lost 4-0 at Borough Briggs last September but came from behind to win a thrilling match 3-2 on our most recent visit in February. Both Forthbank meetings in 2013/14 ended all square. The eight games across the past two seasons have produced three Elgin wins, two Stirling wins and three draws. This is the first time the clubs have met in this competition.
Petrofac Training Cup facts: We have not played at home in this competition since beating Falkirk on penalties after a 0-0 draw on the opening day of 2010/11. This is our sixth successive away tie – we lost 2-1 to eventual winners Raith Rovers 12 months ago. Our best run since the tournament began in 1990 is the semi-finals, which we reached in 1995/96 and 1999/00.
Referee: Nick Walsh
Admission: £10 for adults and £5 concessions
Second-round draw: Takes place at the Petrofac Training Centre in Aberdeen this Tuesday, July 29, at 3.30pm. Ties to be played on August 19/20.
Next up: We face Stenhousemuir at Ochilview in the Stirlingshire Cup on Tuesday then travel to Alloa next Saturday in the first round of the Scottish League Cup.
