Jordan White and Ross Forsyth both missed penalties and we squandered a stack of chances as Elgin earned a draw at Forthbank for the second month in a row.
The visitors twice led through Shane Sutherland and Craig Gunn but we hit back through White and Craig Comrie in a game we should have won comfortably.
With two matches remaining, we are three points ahead of Berwick – who have a better goal difference – so need four points from fixtures with Peterhead and Clyde to be sure of claiming a play-off place.
Binos boss Greig McDonald named an unchanged team in the wake of the 2-0 win at Albion Rovers as we chased a fourth straight victory.
Elgin, who are unbeaten at Forthbank in the last two seasons, went ahead in 14 minutes when Paul Harkins’ corner was met by Shane Sutherland and he thundered the ball into the roof of the net.
We had a great chance to equalise midway through the first half when a Comrie corner was handled by a defender and we were awarded our first penalty in League 2 this season.
White’s kick hit both posts and somehow stayed out but he made amends in 37 minutes when he latched on to a Forsyth pass, cut in from the left, and hammered a low shot past John Gibson for his 17th goal of 2013/14.
The second half was a siege. White was denied by the keeper when clean through then Albion’s second penalty of the day – also awarded for handball – saw Forsyth’s weak effort easily saved.
White blazed over from close range and worse was to follow in 54 minutes when Chris Smith and David Crawford allowed Gunn, who wasted a great chance to give Elgin a 2-0 lead before the break, prodded the ball home.
We continued to press and were eventually rewarded when Comrie beat Gibson from 20 yards with nine minutes left.
Elgin were hanging on as we piled on the pressure but subs Sandy Cunningham and Danny Ashe passed up good opportunities and we were forced to settle for a point as our top-four ambitions took a knock.
