Albion suffered a miserable afternoon as Berwick ran out easy winners to rekindle their play-off hopes as our good start to 2014 came to a shuddering halt.
Greig McDonald’s men headed across the border after recent wins over East Stirlingshire and Queen’s Park but we were dismantled by the home side as new player/boss Colin Cameron, who this week replaced Ian Little, enjoyed a dream debut.
Stirling showed three changes, with Ross McGeachie, Kieran McAnespie and David Weatherston starting in place of David McClune, Luca Gasparotto and Phil Johnston.
We were behind after just 14 seconds. Paul Currie, who recently returned to Shielfield, launched the ball into the box and striker Darren Lavery, who netted a last-minute equaliser in this fixture in September, was unmarked to head past David Crawford.
It was the fifth time in six games Albion had fallen behind and we never looked like recovering from the shock of such an early setback as we failed to score for the first time since losing 4-0 at Elgin in September.
Defender Dean Hoskins nodded home the second goal 10 minutes from half-time after a terrific delivery from a Lee Currie free-kick.
Binos boss McDonald threw on all three substitutes at the interval, with McClune, Johnston and Cunningham replacing Dale Fulton, Weatherston and Mark Ferry and we briefly threatened, with Cunningham having a shot blocked, but home keeper Michael Andrews had little to do all day.
Berwick put the game beyond any doubt in 54 minutes when Lee Currie fired a penalty straight down the middle after Ross Forsyth had tripped Ross Gray in the area.
Our day got worse when we were reduced to 10 men – McAnespie forced off with a hamstring injury – and almost immediately midfielder Paul Currie found the corner with a fine strike from 20 yards just before the hour mark to complete an emphatic victory as we slipped to fourth place in League 2.
