Albion leapt from ninth to third in the League 2 table after a deserved win over Montrose in what was our best performance of the season.
Chris Smith headed the opener from Danny Ashe’s corner after just 60 seconds and, although Bryan Deasley equalised in 15 minutes, second-half goals from Jordan White and substitute Sandy Cunningham sealed an impressive victory.
It was our second win of 2013/14 against Montrose and moved us to within three points of leaders East Stirling as we prepare to face Clyde at Broadwood next week.
The visitors hadn’t lost since the middle of August but Greig McDonald’s men played some good passing football and carved out a number of opportunities on a Forthbank pitch made slick by earlier heavy rain.
Albion showed two changes to the team that had beaten Whitehill Welfare in the Scottish Cup, with Bradley Coyne making his first start of the season and Ross McGeachie returning as Kieran McAnespie missed out through injury and Dale Fulton moved to the bench. U19 players Chris Paton and Blair Munn were among the subs and Paton made his debut as a very late replacement for White.
The Binos made a dream start when Smith rose to head home Ashe’s corner but Montrose levelled when Deasley, enjoying a successful spell on loan from Forfar, made space on the edge of the box and cracked a superb shot beyond David Crawford.
Both sides had further chances before the break and 1-1 was about right at the interval but Stirling were ahead within three minutes of the restart.
Phil Johnston did well on the right wing and picked out Mark Ferry, who turned the ball into the path of White to net his fifth goal of the season.
There was a suspicion of offside about the third goal as Cunningham raced clear but there was no denying the cool finish of the 18-year-old, who had only been on the pitch for three minutes, as he clipped the ball beyond keeper Stuart McKenzie for the third goal of his senior career.
