Wrexham claimed the Raydale Cup this afternoon as three second-half goals earned the Conference play-off runners-up a 3-0 win over Stirling Albion.
Earlier in the day, hosts Gretna 2008 defeated a young St Mirren side 2-0 to finish third in the tournament.
Player-boss Andy Morrell opened the scoring in 51 minutes, Kevin Thornton doubled the Welsh club’s lead midway through the second period and Adrian Cieslewicz added a late third for the team who hammered St Mirren 6-1 in their semi-final.
We more than held our own in the first half but, on another warm day, Wrexham were able to up the pace after changing their entire team at the break and that proved decisive – although we created some good openings of our own.
Binos boss Greig McDonald fielded a totally different outfield starting line-up from the side that had beaten Gretna 3-1 the previous day, with Graham Weir the lone striker.
Assistant manager Marc McCulloch was deployed as a holding midfielder while youngsters Matthew Cooper, Sandy Cunningham and Chris Ogilvie were tasked with supporting Weir.
Albion played some good football in the first half and matched a Wrexham side that included veteran striker Brett Ormerod, who has played in the Premier League for Southampton and Blackpool.
Chances were at a premium before the interval but Morrell pounced for Wrexham soon after the restart when he netted with a simple header after a shot had come back off the underside of the bar.
Stirling reacted positively and Cunningham came close with a drive that was tipped over then Kieran McAnespie’s header was blocked by keeper Joslain Mayebi after he got on the end of an Ogilvie cross.
Thornton scored the second for The Dragons after David Crawford made a good save and Cieslewicz ensured the silverware would be heading to North Wales with a neat finish seven minutes from time.
